Do you know a teen that might benefit from an engaging and active group process this summer? For group purposes, “recovery” is broadly defined and can mean mental health and/or addiction. Group is a space where teens can learn alternatives to the success/failure mentality and develop more safety, trust, intimacy, esteem, and internal control. You do not need experience in climbing to join our process. And the only requirement for membership in the group is engagement, presence, and a willingness to participate! We will be doing processing and sharing (at the group space) as well as experiential activities (at the indoor rock gym)! We will be learning about the mind/body connection. If you are interested in joining the Group process, please contact me.
Benefits and Risks
Groups have some unique benefits and risks that you should understand. The benefits include:
- A Sense of Belonging: After experiencing life transitions, trauma, or emotional events you may feel isolated. Being part of the group process means you are not alone.
- Support Network: The value of one person helping another is without parallel. You will be able to get support from others with lived experience that is free of shame.
- Perspective: Listening to others share can offer unique perspectives, coping strategies, and skills. The group process is a powerful experience that can enable feedback and awareness.
- Cost: Group is less expensive than individual sessions as the time is shared between members. This makes it more financially accessible.
- Physical: As with any physically engaging activity, there are measurable health benefits to movement and being in your body. For example, even light exercise burns cortisol (the body’s stress hormone) and improves our mood and overall heart health!
The risks of groups include:
- Speaking In Front of Others: Sharing in groups can often feel challenging. However, this process most often enables the development of trust and esteem.
- Sharing Time: There are likely to be a variety of people sharing time together in the group setting. This means you will have more opportunity to learn with others, but less than individual work.
- Confidentiality: Confidentiality is a strict requirement of the process. However, unlike individual work, the group space is shared between members. That said, I have found members to be highly respectful and supportive of one another.
- Scheduling: Group happens on a specific day and time. It is possible the time may be inconvenient and it can make rescheduling an issue.
- Physical: As with any physically engaging activity there is a risk of injury. That said, we will be matching activity engagement to individual ability and using best practices, such as stretching, safety checks, education, and pacing.
How it Works
Dates are temporarily postponed. Please contact me for further details.
We will be meeting 4-6pm on Mondays for a total of 12-groups. The group will meet for a check-in and processing at the office and then walk several blocks to Movement Rock Gym. The total cost for all 12 sessions is $1000. And we have partnered with the gym to include admission, an introductory class, and gear rentals all at cost (180)! We will be using rock climbing as a somatic and experiential therapeutic tool. Our group process will work to:
- Build safety, confidence, and esteem
- Set goals and overcome perceived limits
- Change your relationship with fear and failure
- Develop Grounding Techniques & Mindfulness Practices
- Develop trust, intimacy, and internal control in a group setting
- Build skills and be active in the community!
Group will be facilitated by myself and my colleague Taralynn in partnership with Movement Rock Gym. We are both safe certified climbers, client-centered providers, and excited to share our passion with you or your loved one! Please contact me for further details. Thanks!
